Christie tests positive for Covid-19 following Trump debate prep

Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie announced Saturday that he had tested positive for coronavirus, President Donald Trump’s youngest known ally to have been diagnosed in the past 48 hours.

“I just got the message that I am positive for COVID-19” Christie tweeted. “I want to thank all of my friends and colleagues who went out of their way to ask how I was feeling over the past day or two. I will be receiving medical attention today and will keep the necessary people informed of my condition. “

The former Republican governor and 2016 presidential candidate told ABC on Friday that he visited the White House “occasionally” between last Saturday and Tuesday as he helped the president prepare for his debate against Joe Biden.

During the ABC interview, Christie said no one wore masks while preparing the debate. He also said he had a negative test for Covid-19 on Tuesday but will be retested after the president’s diagnosis was released early Friday.

Trump’s stay that week included a private fundraiser at his Bedminster resort in New Jersey on Thursday. Following that trip, it was revealed that the President’s aide, Hope Hicks, who had traveled with Trump this week, had tested positive for the coronavirus.

But New Jersey Republican leaders who attended the Bedminster fundraiser gave no indication that they had seen Christie at the event.

Other Republicans, including Wisconsin Sen., posted positive coronavirus tests within 24 hours. Ron Johnsonwho also announced Saturday morning. Majority Leader of the Senate Mitch McConnell delays the Chamber’s return to Washington from October 5-19.
